What is 777?
We are asked quite a bit what 777 means. It is on our cross, we have a 777 patch, and Chaplain Mike even has it painted on his helmet. So people are naturally curious about it. “777” is our counter to the “666” one might see on kuts here and there. 7 + 7 + 7=21…2 + 1=3…we say it represents the Trinity. Add all the sevens and you get twenty one. Add the two and the one and you get a single 3 – The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. Plus there are over 700 references to the #7 in the Bible!!
The number seven is not a magic number, nor is it a lucky number, nor does it have supernatural power. It’s just a normal number like any other, but it does seem to have a special emphasis in the Bible. So we could say that the number 7 is significant to some Christians because it represent the holiness of God and the truth of the Chistian faith. Just like the symbol of the cross or the fish, the number 7 also symbolizes our faith in the Lord Jesus and the Word of God.
The number 7 is often repeated three times to represent the persons of the Holy Trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. His omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence, and Jesus Christ, our Prophet, Priest and King (as well as to contrast the “666” which represents the Antichrist and the Beast mentioned in prophecy of Revelation, who in the end, will be destroyed in the Lake of Fire.)
The number 7 is also the number of perfection, especially referring to spiritual perfection. In the Bible, the Hebrew word for “seven” also means “full, complete, satisfied and sufficient.” So the number 7 also represents the fullness of Christ and the satisfaction of God’s justice by the perfect sacrifice of Christ, and the all sufficiency we find in Him for life and for eternity.
“For in Christ all the fullness of Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority… For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.” (Col 2:9-10, Rom 11:36)
“I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all fullness of God.” (Eph 3:16-19)
