Our main mission is to bring Jesus to the biker and riding community.
That is mission #1.
At the same time it is clear there have been a number of injustices passed on to the motorcycle community from the law. The "law" comes in two forms. There is the Legislative branch on the state and national level that is always trying to place some type of onerus law or regulations upon the motorycle rider. And there are the law enforcement men and women who sometimes get a bit too aggressive in their view of the law which results in bikers being arrested or unduly harassed for just being a biker. There are a number of court cases across the country against various law enforcement agencies by bikers for these type of situations. And the bikers have very good cases, too! Biker profiling had become such a problem, that the State of Washington was pursuaded to enact an "Anti Biker Profiling Law". This bill passed both houses without a dissenting vote! Several states are in the process of initiating the same type of legislation and there may be a national bill in the very near future.
ABATE of Oregon has been instrumental in stopping all sorts of weird legislation - things no one will ever know or see. They have been successful in getting rid of the handlebar height law as well as enacting legislation so that riders can fuel their own machines. The helmet repeal continues to be fought and lost in this state. ABATE/BikePac has gotten a "Dead Red" bill passed as well as a "Driver Responsibility" bill passed. Lane splitting has become the Holy Grail and has been very elusive. They continue to try to get that legislation passed.
But there are other issues to be fought. There is lane splitting that makes a lot of good sense. We can fight mandatory high-visibility clothing, E15 fuel standards, and maintaining health insurance coverage if one rides a motorcycle. And we fight biker profiling and the idea that motorcycle clubs are street gangs - which they are not. We believe motorcycle clubs have a right to exist. We support the C.O.C.
There is plenty of work to do. But one thing is for sure. As we roll up our sleeves and work side by side with the biker and riding community a funny thing happens. These people get to know true Christians. They see us working on something they are very passionate about. We win the opportunity to share the Gospel or help someone out in some way. We share Christ's love with them. And that sometimes makes all the difference in the world.
2 Cor 5:11-21
11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,”as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[b] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
